Printers keep track of their operations using internal logic counters. Every time your printer cleans its printhead, a small amount of ink is pumped into a physical felt pad at the bottom of the machine, known as the waste ink absorber. Once the printer calculates that these pads are saturated, it locks itself down for safety reasons to prevent ink from leaking onto your desk.

Resetting the digital counter does not physically empty the ink pads. Over time, actual ink may leak out of the bottom of the printer. It is highly recommended to physically wash or replace the internal felt pads, or install an external waste ink bottle mod. Disclaimer and Alternatives
