To defeat a village, you must kill all defending units in a single engagement. If you withdraw before the fight ends, the village instantly regains its full strength.

The barbarians will always have a wall level corresponding to the village level. You must bring siege units to destroy it. Your regular ships (Paddle Wheel Ram, Ballista) are not strong enough to break high-level walls efficiently.
