Young women who express frustration, cry, or bring printed symptom logs are often labeled “anxious” or “histrionic.” Conversely, those who suppress emotion and speak clinically are labeled “cold” or “doctor-shopping.” This double bind—what I term the credibility tax —means that female patients expend enormous cognitive and emotional labor modulating their presentation to be heard.
