The novela is loosely inspired by the life of a real historical figure, Francisca da Silva de Oliveira, known as Chica da Silva. She was born into slavery around 1732, the daughter of an enslaved African woman and a Portuguese man. Unlike the fictionalized version, the historical Chica was the long-term concubine of the powerful diamond contractor João Fernandes de Oliveira, with whom she had 13 children. When he returned to Portugal, he left her incredibly wealthy, with houses, land, and even her own slaves. She navigated the patriarchal colonial society with skill, became a prominent figure in the town of Tijuco (now Diamantina), and was known for her devout Catholicism. The novela takes significant creative liberties, exaggerating her rebelliousness and sensuality to craft a compelling melodrama.
